Step by Step - Install PHP PECL Memcache

In this simple tutorial I show you how to install Memcache for PHP.
You will also need Memcached; How to install Memcached.

Step 1

Login to your box with SSH, or open terminal.

Step 2

Download the latest version of the pecl memcache from here
cd
wget http://pecl.php.net/get/memcache-2.2.6.tgz

Step 3

Untar the package
tar xf memcache-*

Step 4

phpize the package. Make sure you use the right phpize for your version of php (don't worry about this if you are using just one version).
cd memcache*
phpize

Step 5

Build it and install it
make && make install

Step 6

Add extention to php.ini. (How to find php.ini)
nano /etc/php.ini
Find the place where the extentions get loaded and add:

extension = memcache.so

Restart Apache / PHP-FPM / Nginx to reload PHP.

Debian (Ubuntu)

If you are using PHP via your distribution, you can simply enter this and you are done:
sudo apt-get install php5-memcache
